Gardening Temple Health and Safety Policy
Gardening Temple is committed to providing a safe, healthy working environment for employees, clients and the wider community across our gardening service area. This Health & Safety policy sets out the principles by which our garden maintenance company operates, how risks are identified and managed, and the expectations we have for everyone who works with or for our garden care provider business. Our aim is to prevent accidents, reduce occupational health hazards, and maintain high standards of safety in every green space we tend.
As a garden maintenance company, Gardening Temple recognises that safety is integral to quality service delivery. Responsibilities are shared: senior management are accountable for policy implementation; supervisors ensure safe systems of work day-to-day; and every operative must follow procedures and report hazards. We place emphasis on training, correct use of tools and equipment, and sensible planning of tasks in the landscaping and gardening company field to protect staff, clients, and the public.
This policy applies across our service area and covers routine gardening duties, groundskeeping, tree and shrub work, landscaping tasks, use of powered equipment, pesticide and fertiliser handling, and contracted projects. It does not replace statutory documents but provides a clear statement of intent and the practical measures we take to manage safety without over-emphasising jurisdictional legal specifics. A risk-based approach supports our operations in diverse settings, from domestic gardens to communal green spaces.
Core safety principles and commitments
We will: identify hazards, assess risks, and implement controls; provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE); ensure safe maintenance of machinery; and foster a culture of continuous improvement. All staff will receive induction and periodic refresher training tailored to their role, whether they are part of our core gardening team or contracted specialists working within our gardening service area.
Our key commitments include conducting documented risk assessments before new projects, applying hierarchy of controls to reduce exposure to hazards, and ensuring safe storage and handling of chemicals. We also prioritise manual handling training, noise and vibration mitigation, and procedures for working at height or near water features. These measures aim to protect both operatives and the clients who rely on our garden care services.
To translate commitments into practice we use clear written procedures and visible signage on sites where appropriate. Supervisors perform daily briefings, job-specific toolbox talks, and record checks to ensure compliance. Where specialised work is required, such as professional tree surgery or complex landscaping, only qualified personnel with verified competence carry out those tasks.
Roles, responsibilities and safe systems
Management: set strategy, allocate resources, review safety performance and lead incident investigations. Supervisors: plan tasks, allocate PPE, and enforce safe working methods. Workers: follow instructions, use PPE correctly, report near-misses and hazards promptly. Contractors must adhere to Gardening Temple standards and share evidence of competence and insurance before commencing work.
Operational controls include the following measures implemented by our garden care provider teams:
- Pre-work risk assessments and method statements;
- Regular maintenance and inspection of tools, mowers, chainsaws and trailers;
- Use of appropriate PPE such as eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, high-visibility clothing and protective footwear;
- Safe storage and labelling of pesticides, herbicides and fuels;
- Traffic management plans for roadside or shared-access sites.
We encourage a proactive culture where everyone contributes to safety improvements and where practical suggestions are considered and acted upon. Training records, equipment logs and incident reports are maintained to ensure transparency and accountability across the gardening company.
Emergency preparedness is a priority: first aid kits are accessible, designated first-aiders are appointed, and clear procedures exist for major incidents, fire and medical emergencies. Reporting and investigation protocols focus on identifying root causes and preventing recurrence while preserving confidentiality and fairness for those involved.
Health matters such as exposure to allergens, heat stress, fatigue and long-term musculoskeletal risks are addressed through job rotation, ergonomic guidance and access to occupational health support where needed. We promote safe work planning to minimise lone working risks and ensure check-in systems are in place for isolated tasks within our gardening service area.
Monitoring, review and continual improvement form the final element of the policy. Performance is monitored via inspections, audits, and regular management reviews. Where incidents occur, corrective actions are tracked to completion. This policy is reviewed annually or sooner when operational changes, new equipment, or emerging hazards require an update. Gardening Temple strives to be a leading garden maintenance company that delivers exceptional garden services while maintaining uncompromising safety standards.
Approval: This Health & Safety policy has been approved by senior management and will be communicated to all staff, contractors and stakeholders. It reflects our ongoing commitment to safe, sustainable garden care and the wellbeing of everyone who interacts with Gardening Temple.
